How Do I Join a Medicare Advantage Program?

In order to enroll in a Medicare Advantage plan, you must already be enrolled in Medicare Part A and Medicare Part B.  Although most seniors aged 65 or older or individuals under 65 with certain disabilities are automatically covered under each of these, Medicare Part B is optional, so you should verify that you are covered under Part B, and if not, enroll in it prior to joining a Medicare Advantage program.

Enrolling During Your 65th Birthday

It’s important to review all available information about Medicare before deciding on a plan.  If you feel the streamlined hospital care process that Medicare Advantage provides is for you, during your initial Medicare enrollment period, (three months before and the three months after the month you turn 65), you have the option to join a Medicare Advantage Program.  If you choose to enroll in a plan at this time, you should find a Medicare Advantage provider and file all necessary paperwork when enrolling in Medicare.

Enrolling After the Initial Enrollment Period

If you do not opt to enroll in a Medicare Advantage program during your initial enrollment period, there are certain times during the year in which changes may be made to Medicare plans:

  • Between October 15th and December 7th:  Any desired changes to your plan may be made including enrollment with a Medicare Advantage provider.  This period is known as the “Annual Election Period.”
  • Between January 1st and February 14th:  This period is referred to as the “open enrollment period” for Medicare. Some changes may be made during this period but not all.  Specifically to note, though, you can dis-enroll from Medicare Advantage, but you cannot enroll in a Medicare Advantage plan.
  • During a Special Enrollment Period which occurs anytime throughout the year for very specific situations.  For more information about this special period, please visit Medicare.gov to see you if qualify.

To enroll in a Medicare Advantage program, you should first familiarize yourself with available Medicare Advantage providers in your area. Once you have found a plan you like, you may enroll in it by calling the provider or by filling out an application through the provider. To get started, request a quote today! Click here
